On Monday, June 7, an inauguration ceremony and press conference was held for the establishment of the Renewable Energy University League of Japan. President Sachihiko Harashina of Chiba University of Commerce was appointed representative caretaker, and President Yoshiaki Terumichi of Sophia University, caretaker of the League. Founding member universities are International Christian University, Wayo Women’s University, University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, The University of Nagano, Hiroshima University, and Tokyo Medical and Dental University, led by Chiba University of Commerce.

The Renewable Energy University League of Japan aims to facilitate the utilization of renewable energy at universities and to foster human resources to promote such efforts. Seeking to eventually source 100% renewable energy for their operations, member universities are required to commit to a goal to produce or procure 100% renewable energy by a self-determined target year set around 2030 to 2040.

The Japanese Government has also declared that it would “become carbon neutral in 2050” and that it would take measures to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The League aims to achieve its target by 2040, contributing to the decarbonization of society one step ahead.

At the press conference, President Terumichi shared his ambitions, commenting, “By establishing the League, we have been able to build a network across universities. I would now like to create a scheme under which students can join forces to take action in the context of renewable energy promotion and decarbonizing society. I also hope to communicate the League’s activities to the world as a Japan-led initiative.”

Sophia University Yotsuya Campus started procuring electric power sourced by 100% renewable energy in June 2020. Initially, 95% of its power consumption was renewable energy. In March 2021, it achieved 100% renewable energy (excluding Sanadabori Ground).

The League will invite like-minded universities and supporting companies to become members. It also has a membership program for individuals and students to welcome those who are interested in renewable energy and achieving a decarbonized society to join.
