「持続可能な開発 」は、地球市民にとって共通の重要テーマです。今を生きる自分たちの世代だけでなく、未来の人々のためにも、経済成長、社会開発、環境保全の三要素をバランスよく保つことが必須だ、とされています。

しかし、そもそもそのようなことは可能なのでしょうか。利益相反を内包するこの概念はどのような歴史的背景のもと提唱されたのか、この概念が共通理解を得る過程でどのような主体がどの様な役割を担ってきたのか、努力と協調の先にWin-Win-Winの未来が存在するとしたら、どのようなイノベーティブな思考が必要なのか、また逆に注意すべき点は何か。

この授業では、これらの問いに対する手がかりを得るためには、「開発」概念の歴史的・政治的背景と文脈の理解を深めるとともに、物理的な限界でもある環境収容力を正しく認識するための「場」を提供します。創造力とクリティカルシンキングを駆使して、学生自身がこの概念を再定義し、その上で各々のアイデアを実行に移すことが求められています。

【Course description】

Sustainable Development” is an imperative topic for global citizens. It is defined as balancing economic growth, society, and the environment, not only for ourselves but for future generations. But is such a thing possible in the first place? What is the historical background of this concept, which encompasses conflicts of interest, what actors are involved, is it possible to achieve a win-win-win situation, and what kind of innovative thinking is needed to accomplish this? With creativity and critical thinking skills, you all need to redefine this concept for yourselves and implement your ideas.

To get clues to these questions, we need to know the historical and political background of the “development” concept, its contextual assumptions, and its environmental carrying capacity as a limit to our perception of what we really need.

This lecture will provide an opportunity to reflect on what we want future development to be and how to pursue our shared future goal of “sustainable development.”
