Sophia University uses renewable energy for 100% of the energy consumption on the Yotsuya campus. In addition, a new solar power generation facility was built in March 2025, introducing the “renewable energy with additionality”. “Additionality” refers to the effect that the use of renewable energy encourages the construction and introduction of new power generation facilities, resulting in the increase of supplied renewable energy. We can not only use existing renewable energy with certificates but also build a new solar power generation facility. This time, we can enhance the spread of renewable energy in society and contribute to preventing climate change issues.

Before starting sending energy, student staff visited the solar power generation facility. For the visit, student staff listed questions they wanted to ask and asked them directly to the staff of the cooperating company. Student staff heard that since a site of horse stable was used to build the facility, there are no risks of deforestation and land slide disaster, and explanatory meeting for community residents was held before the construction to get understanding by them.

Throughout the visit, we were overwhelmed by the large scale of the power generation facility, and at the same time, felt that the supply of renewable energy to Sophia university is based on the cooperation with many companies and organizations. It was a precious opportunity to know that the issue of energy cannot be solved by only a university, and cooperation with people from various situations is crucial.

Afterwards, we made a bulletin object based on what we learned in the visit and displayed them on the first floor of building 2 in Yotsuya campus from March to April in 2025. In the making process, we tried to put what we experienced there as much detail as possible and make the information rich. In addition, to get more attraction for students, we also cared about the design of them by making them visually clear.

Sophia University promotes the creation of energy that introduces sustainable energy with additivity.

Sophia University promotes the creation of renewable energy with additionality.

We, students, also want to contribute to the implementation of carbon-neutral by introducing energy conservation, such as turning off unnecessary electricity in the classroom and at home and caring about the temperature setting of the air conditioner.
