Started in 2014 with the concept “To consider our world and the future through the U.N activities”, this will be its 9th time for Sophia UN weeks to be held. Eight events will take place including the talk session welcoming David Chikvidze, Chef de Cabinet to the Director General of UNOG with Akashi Yasushi, Former Under-Secretary General of the UN and Ichiro Fujisaki, Former Japanese Ambassador to the United States. We hope as many of you will be able to attend.

We are witnessing the major changes in international relations. Are we moving in the direction of more conflicts or a more collaborative and peaceful world? We seem to be at a crossroads of these different currents. In that context what can the United Nations do? “The evolution of Business and Human Rights and Challenges for Japanese business at home and abroad – marking the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights”

Since the adoption of UN Guiding Principles of Business and Human Rights, the role of businesses in the realization of human rights has drawn increasing attention and corporate efforts in various business sectors have been progressing. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly. To honor this milestone, the international symposium will highlight the evolution of business and human rights, including the changing landscape of expectations for businesses. We will
be joined by representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) as the keynote speaker, to provide insights into the role businesses should take to promote respect for human rights.
In particular, the symposium will focus on the role of finance to drive respect for human rights, and discuss ongoing efforts undertaken by companies to address human rights risks in overseas supply chains as well as those in Japan related to foreign worker rights in the run up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and beyond.

“Education for Sustainable Development ESD in Higher Education：How does a University face the Challenge of SDGs”

United Nations declared Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015. In Japan, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has been promoted in schools such as those registered as UNESCO Associated Schools (UNESCO Schools). Primary and secondary schools are undergoing major curriculum revisions, enabling them to adopt more holistic approaches to learning for the 21st century. In the meantime, some higher education institutions have attempted to create cross-maintaining essentially discipline-based teaching. How does a university deal with the idea of a “sustainable society” proposed by the United Nations and engage students in learning in a meaningful way? This symposium provides an opportunity to reflect on these questions particularly from the perspective of social science.
