On June 21, Sophia symposium “Mainstreaming Biodiversity Towards Achieving Aichi Biodiversity Targets and SDGs“ (Organized by Sophia University Graduate School of Environment Studies (GSGES) and Institute for Studies of the Global Environment with cooperation of Sophia University Human Resources Center for International Cooperation supported by Japan Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Foreign Affairs) was held at Yotsuya Campus, Room 101 No.6 Building.

At first Dr. Palmer gave keynote speech introducing the progress on Aicihi Biodiversity Targets (2011~2020) and mainstreaming biodiversity toward achieving SDGs. She emphasized it is critical for the leaders worldwide to make decisions in mainstreaming biodiversity in order to reverse the trends of biodiversity loss at the same time she highly valued the effort made by Japan in international negotiation as well as funding to support developing countries.

Following Mr. Naohisa Okuda, Director, Biodiversity Policy Division, Ministry of the Environment reported various efforts in partnering with various sectors such as countries linked by UNDB-J (United Nations Decade on Biodiversity –Japan), local government offices, NGOs, business owners and the citizen. He also mentioned the need in changing our life styles in order to achieve the goals. Panel discusison Panel discusison

The tasks in order for mainstreaming biodiversity was the main topic for the panel discussion; Dr. Naoki Adachi, Executive Director, Japan Business Initiative for Biodiversity (JBIB) introduced the efforts of Japanese corporations in joint researches and communicating with stakeholders, Mr. Masahito Enomoto, Vice President for Food Agriculture and Nutrition, JICA discussed of wetland conservation as well as the food assistance project and Dr. Sylvian Agostini, Assistant Professor Tsukuba University presented the climate change and its effect to coral conditions. At last Dr. Palmer called out for everyone to widely communicate the importance of biodiversity also to people of none related fields.
