The event will be held from June 6 (Mon) to 11(Sat). First held in 2014 this initiative is now taking place for fifth time and each year featuring range of opportunities to consider our future and the world trough UN activities.

In “United Nations Sustainable Development Summit 2015” held at United Nations Headquarter in New York, “Transforming Our World: 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” was adopted. 2030 agenda with the motto “leaving no one behind” has set 17 goals and 169 targets for “SDGs” (Sustainable Development Goals)
Sophia University participating in United Nations Academic Impact as well as United Nations Global Compact, we will continue to offer the educational program for the learning of international cooperation in multi aspects such as “United Nations Week” aiming to cultivate human resources to challenge the global issues such as “SDGs” for the time to come.

【1】ILO (International Labor Organization) Photo Exhibition (Open to the public)

“No One Should Work This Way”: Preventing the Abuse of Domestic Workers

In 2011 a treaty became in force by ILO to protect the right of domestic workers. However it is only in effect in less than twenty countries as of today. We shall give our thoughts to the realities revealed through the photos taken by the world renowned photojournalist Steve McCurry.

【2】Photojournalist meets International Cooperation Professionals “Following Up the People Living Under Conflicts”(Open to public)

At the first part of presentation a Sophia graduate photojournalist, Ms. Natsuki Yasuda and former JICA Iraq Office Chief Representative, Mr. Shohei Hara will discuss of Iraq from the each stand point of view.
Professor Yasuhiro Ueki of Faculty of Global Studies will also participate in the second part of the presentation.

【3】Symposium: “Facing the Challenge of Living Together: Past, Present and Future of Bosnia & Herzegovina” (Open to Public)

Bosnia & Herzegovina experienced a violent conflict in early 1990s. The country still suffers from the legacy of the war, with inter-ethnic tensions in social, political and cultural spheres. In the meantime, there are signs of hope, with people working hard to restore and rebuild social fabrics. This symposium considers challenges and possibilities of “living together” in an increasingly multicultural world.

(1)A short introduction to Bosnia & Herzegovina
Dr. Mari Katayanagi,
Professor of Hiroshima University and a former resident of Bosnia, provides a brief but vivid sketch of the country.

(2)Special video message
An insightful message from Dr. Valentin Inzko,
the High Representative for Bosnia & Herzegovina (BiH), the top envoy of the international community in BiH.

(3)Talk session
This pre-recorded talk session brings together Mr. Tsuneyasu Miyamoto, a former captain of the Japanese National Football Team, and Mr.　Toshio Yanagisawa, a music director for The Chamber Orchestra of Balkan, to discuss their activities. Mr Miyamoto has established a soccer academy in the divided city of Mostar, while Mr. Yanagisawa leads ethnically-mixed orchestras from the Balkan region.

(4)Panel discussion
The panel discussion, attended by a former UN worker, career diplomat and academics, focuses on the current challenges faced by Bosnia & Herzegovina as well as lessons learnt, and explores future possibilities to build a peaceful and resilient society.

【4】Art Exhibition by Bosnia & Herzegovina artists “All We Could Have Done”(Open to Public)

A one-day exhibition of works from Bosnia & Herzegovina is held outside the symposium venue. Some 30 works of students of the University of East Sarajevo Academy of Arts, as well as print works of Dr. Taida Jasarevic, a renowned artist and one-time resident of Japan, and large acrylic paint works of Mr. Muhamed Kafedzic Muha, inspired by classic and contemporary Japanese paintings.

【５】Symposium: “Roll of Japan and Our People in Development and Humanitarian Aid – Following World Humanitarian Summit” (Open to Public)

Following World Humanitarian Summit held in Istanbul Turkey on May 23 and 24, a keynote lecture by former UN ambassador and African Society Representative, Mr. Kenzo Oshima and the panel discussion will be held by the experts in the international cooperation fields.
